Motorcycles are more popular than ever as an alternative mode of transportation.  There are several reasons for this.  Motorcycles are cheaper than cars, take less fuel, are more flexible in traffic and are easier to park.  People also enjoy the thrill of outperforming cars and being outside and breathing fresh air on a motorcycle.  With all its advantages, however, motorcycles are more dangerous than cars on American roadways and can cause a severe motorcycle accident due to a little negligence or carelessness.

Motorcycle Crashes can be more Serious than other Accidents

Since a motorcycle does not provide safety features found in larger vehicles, the injuries in a motorcycle crash are often more serious.  According to the National Traffic Safety Administration, the number of deaths on motorcycles in 2013 was over 26 times the number in cars.  There were 4,668 motorcyclists killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2013 in the United States.  Motorcyclists accounted for 14% of all traffic fatalities.

Persons surviving a motorcycle accident may sustain traumatic brain injury, amputation, fractures, spinal cord injury, or other serious injuries.

Primary Causes of a Motorcycle Accident

One of the main reasons for deadly motorcycle crashes is speeding.  The National Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 34 percent of all motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes were speeding.

Alcohol is another major reason for deadly motorcycle accidents.  Of the motorcycle riders killed in 2013, the government concluded that 28% of them were alcohol impaired with BAC of .08 or higher.  Motorcycle riders generally have had a higher percentage of alcohol impairment than those involved in other vehicle crashes.

In Texas, the influence of alcohol on motorcycle fatality accidents is much higher than the national average.  Data from 2013 shows that 45% of motorcycle riders killed in Texas were alcohol impaired.

Motorcycles are also more dangerous than larger vehicles because non-observant and distracted drivers of other vehicles may not notice a motorcycle.  Negligence of larger vehicle drivers results in serious injuries and deaths for motorcycle riders.

Additionally, a motorcycle may not be handle certain road designs and defects at high speeds, causing injuries and deaths to motorcycle riders.
